5 types of Transmission CONTainers

• type 1 – fixed BW
• type 2 – assured BW
• type 3 – allocated BW + non-assured BW
• type 4 – best effort
• type 5 – superset of all of the above

GEM adds several PON-layer QoS features

• fragmentation enables pre-emption of large low-priority frames
• PLI – explicit packet length can be used by queuing algorithms
• PTI bits carry congestion indications
